Calroy is led by an executive team with decades of combined experience in health, nutrition, management and marketing.
Chen Chen, PhD
Co-Founder & Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Chen Chen is a widely respected scientist and entrepreneur. He has conducted pioneering research in the field of food and nutrition for over 30 years, and was already recognized for his contributions to science in his student years. His master’s thesis was published by the Atherosclerosis Journal, and in a very rare circumstance, he was directly funded as the principal investigator for his PhD research by the American Heart Association.
Dr. Chen’s early work on lipoprotein metabolism and cardiovascular diseases led him to recognize the vital importance of dietary lipids to human health. He also developed an expertise in natural bioactives including dietary antioxidants. He later joined the health industry as an R&D scientist for a pharmaceutical company while serving as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Health and Human Sciences at UNC-Greensboro. For six years, Dr. Chen formulated many popular nutraceuticals, medical foods and OTC products, oversaw several clinical studies, and served on important industry initiatives such as the USP Botanical Task Force.
Besides championing healthy lipids, Dr. Chen has conducted extensive studies on functional carbohydrates and has participated in the R&D of some of the most innovative products on the market, such as Arterosil®. He is currently directing a state-of-art research program on vascular health at Calroy.
As a business leader, Dr. Chen has founded several highly successful companies, including one of America’s largest importers of essential fatty acids and other specialty ingredients for the nutritional supplement industry.
Through collaboration with scientists and innovators around the world, Dr. Chen has made it his mission to develop the best nutritional knowledge and products to help people lead long, happy and productive lives.
As Calroy’s CEO, Ed Hoyt brings decades of experience as a successful business leader in the nutritional industry.
He began his career as an aerospace engineer, specializing in pneumatic fin-actuation control systems for missile systems such as Sidewinder, Harpoon, Tomahawk & Patriot. Although he excelled in engineering, Ed left the industry to follow his personal mission – “to enrich the quality of life of people worldwide.”
In 1993, Ed co-founded and led a nutraceutical company which grew to over $150 million in total sales, with operations in 13 countries. His company served thousands of health care professionals worldwide. Its many first-in-class nutritional products were used by 26 major league baseball, basketball and football teams including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets and the New York Jets.
Ed has been featured in numerous business publications, including Entrepreneurs Illustrated, Opportunity World, Success Magazine, and the Nutrition Business Journal. He has appeared on CNN and was nominated “Arizona Entrepreneur of the Year” by Merrill Lynch.
